Glasgow wedding venue fails to overturn ban on holding events

Councillors then heard from objectors who raised concerns over noise impact which they described as “incredibly stressful”.

One resident said: “We live directly above the Haberdashery and are mostly affected by loud noise, thumping, music and noisy patrons which affects us in all areas of our flat.

“This feels as sometimes we cannot escape the noise and this is incredibly stressful.”

She added that planners had been shocked to see just how close the Haberdashery’s windows were to the back of the flat, and that noise was coming “through the walls.”

However another nearby resident said that nightlife comes with the sound of drunks and the occasional street altercation, but he had never been disturbed by excessive noise from the Haberdashery.

The resident added that he hoped the building did not become boarded up or fall into use as a vape shop.

Councillors expressed mixed opinions on the best course of action.

Bailie Martha Wardrop said: “On principle I accept this refusal, we are standing up for a planning process which needs to be strengthened.

“We need to respect our planning principles and we need to support our actual city centre where our night-time economy needs to be enhanced and we need to encourage this business to move into the actual city centre.”

But Bailie Anne MacTaggart said she didn’t want to see any more empty properties in that area.

She said: “There’s already three empty properties within that block and I really don’t want to see a fourth.

“I really want to support vibrant businesses owners or entrepreneurs to come together to make Glasgow the city it should be and that it is.”

Following the discussion the plans were refused.
