European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final 1968: Cardiff City v SV Hamburg

Cardiff City are set to play Hamburg on Sunday, 21 July in a pre-season friendly.

The last time the Bluebirds faced the German side was in the semi-final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1968.

After pulling off a 1-1 draw in Germany against Hamburg in the first leg of the semi-final, Cardiff City found themselves with a chance to make history.

On 1 May, 1968 at Ninian Park the Bluebirds were a game away from becoming the only Welsh side and the first club from the old Second Division to make a European final.

With just seven British teams having reached a European final up to 1968, Cardiff’s progress in that season’s Cup Winners’ Cup – from the initial 32 teams down to the last four – was their greatest European campaign.
