Northampton Saints wing Edoardo Todaro has been suspended for two games following his red card against Bristol Bears last Saturday.
The 19-year-old Italy international was sent off for 20 minutes for a dangerous aerial tackle on Sam Worsley early in the match at Ashton Gate.
The subsequent charge, which Todaro admitted, related to “tackling, charging, pulling, pushing, or grasping the jumper in the air”.
The ban means he will miss Northampton’s first two European Champions Cup games against Pau, on Saturday, and Pretoria Bulls.
The Rugby Football Union said in their written judgment that the changing nature of the game meant there were “more frequent instances of contact in the air and greater potential for harm being occasioned to players”.
The statement continued: “It is for this reason that players must exercise a high level of caution as they approach, take off and land.”
It was accepted that Todaro had not committed an “intentional act of foul play” but had “recklessly executed” his challenge for the ball.
Worsley did not suffer any serious injury in the incident and Bristol went on to win the game 46-12 – Northampton’s first league defeat of the season.
