East Surrey Hospital: Major incident after power outage

BBC South East’s health correspondent Mark Norman said ambulances are not being sent to the hospital in Redhill and he understands they are on “full divert”.

It follows a similar incident earlier this year when a power failure impacted the hospital’s intensive care and high dependency units.

The urgent treatment centre, external at Crawley Hospital is open all night, NHS England said.

The spokeswoman for the East Surrey Hospital trust said: “Unfortunately, because of an unexpected power outage which happened earlier today, we have declared a major incident.

“We are asking the public not to come to the hospital and to seek alternative care.

“We have cancelled some non-urgent operations and treatments.”

She said patients were still at the hospital and being looked after but they could not take any new patients.

“We are having to divert any new attendances,” she said.
