Doomsday Clock moves closer to midnight than ever before

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists have moved the Doomsday Clock closer to midnight than ever before. The clock is now 85 seconds to midnight, the closest it has come to catastrophe since its debut 80 years ago.

Last year, the clock was set at 89 seconds to midnight. Alexandra Bell, president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, warned that “every second counts, and we are running out of time.”

The Doomsday Clock was first created in 1947 during the Cold War, when the United States and the Soviet Union were heading into a nuclear arms race.
