Dog expert shares key signs to look out for ‘doggie depression’ during winter

Pet experts are telling dog owners to watch out for signs that their furry friends might be feeling down. It seems the gloomy weather doesn’t just make us humans feel sad, it can also affect our dogs.

If your dog seems a bit down, they might be feeling anxious or even a bit depressed. They’re not worried about money or bills, but not being able to go out and play like usual because of bad weather can upset them.

Many dogs could get something like Seasonally Affected Disorder (SAD), which is when people feel sad because of the weather. But don’t worry, there are ways to cheer up your dog and things to look out for.

Samantha Greener from Vita Paws says winter can be tough for dogs who miss their fun summer walks.

She says: “It’s vital that owners are watchful for the tell-tale signs of doggie depression during winter.”

“If a dog goes off its food, if it’s sleeping more than usual or seems withdrawn, restless and uninterested in games or exercise then you could have a seriously depressed dog on your hands.

Sadly many owners aren’t fully aware of the amount of exercise their dog requires to be healthy as it can vary massively depending on the breed.”

Greener suggests checking your dog’s exercise routine and thinking about returning to the same schedule they had in the warmer months.

Dog owners can also review their pet’s diet and add supplements if necessary to ensure they’re getting all the nutrients needed.

“Most dogs will perk up with a bit more exercise and the chance to spend some quality time with their owners,” the expert added.

“But if your dog’s mood doesn’t lift you should definitely seek a professional opinion.”
