Dafydd Williams: Caretaker not ruling out Newport County job full time

Newport County caretaker boss Dafydd Williams is not ruling himself out of the running for the job full-time, saying he wants to stay at the club “in whatever capacity”.

Williams was placed in temporary charge for the final two games of the season following the departure of Nelson Jardim.

The 32-year-old will lead Newport in their final fixture of the 2024-25 League Two campaign against Tranmere Rovers at Rodney Parade on Saturday, 3 May (15:00 BST).

Williams says it has been an “honour” to manage the side, and is ready to step into the role on a permanent basis if he is asked.

“Well, I 100% trust in my ability and my capabilities as a coach and a head coach,” said Williams when asked if he felt he could do the top job.

“Equally, I want the right person to manage this football club. The club deserves that, the fans deserve that.

“Whatever capacity it is, I would love to stay. I’ve had a really good two years here.”

Williams has been on the coaching staff at Newport since former boss Graham Coughlan brought him in from Bristol Rovers.

He says he has not spoken to chairman Huw Jenkins about next season but feels the club need to appoint a new boss as soon as possible.

“I think it goes without saying that the earlier, the better,” he said. “It gives that person more time.

“I have no doubt the chairman and other people behind the scenes are working hard to find the right person.”

County, 21st in League Two, hope to end a disappointing season on a high by securing their first win in nine games, with Williams urging his team to get the fans’ “juices flowing” ahead of next season.
