A passenger jet has collided mid-air with a Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopter over Washington DC.
The crash site is centred on the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
The jet was identified as a PSA Airlines service (flight 5342) operating for American Airlines, flying from the city of Wichita in Kansas.
Local police said on social media that “a multi-agency search and rescue operation is under way”.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it was gathering more information on the incident.
All takeoffs and landings at the airport have been temporarily halted, though the terminal remains open.
