A drug proven to extend the life of some people with incurable breast cancer has been given to NHS patients in Wales for the first time.

Research shows that capivasertib, when combined with hormone therapy, can have a “real life impact for people”, according to Prof Rob Jones who co-led a study looking at its effectiveness.

Gwen Buchan, 62, from Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, said it could allow her to see her son’s wedding and gave her “hope” for the future.

More than 2,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in Wales every year.
