Police were called to reports of a stabbing on Pretoria Road in Bordesley Green at about 15:30 GMT on Saturday

A 16-year-old boy has been charged after another teenager was stabbed and suffered serious injuries.

West Midlands Police were called to reports of a stabbing on Pretoria Road, in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham, at about 15:30 GMT on Saturday.

The force said on Tuesday that a 16-year-old boy had been charged with wounding with intent, possession of an offensive weapon, and attempted robbery.

The injured boy, who is also 16, remains in hospital in a stable condition.

The teenager charged over the stabbing has been held in custody and is due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

A group of man and boys stand close together. They are mainly wearing dark coats and some are holding up yellow placards that say "Stop Knife Crime" in black capital letters.

About 200 people gathered the day after the Bordesley Green stabbing to protest against knife crime

The area covered by West Midlands Police has the second highest rate of knife crime in England and Wales, according to official figures released last month.

This area, which includes Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton, previously had the highest rate but reported knife crime fell in the latest figures.

About 200 people gathered on Pretoria Road on Sunday, a day after the Bordesley Green stabbing, to protest against knife crime.

Estera Makghioala, who attended the protest, said people were “very scared” when their children went outside to school or to the local shop.

“We have a lot of mums here with a scared feeling,” she said.
