Birmingham quad bikes spark fear of harm to public

A group of quad bikes weaving through city centre traffic, running red lights and almost hitting pedestrians has sparked fears that people could be seriously hurt unless action is taken.

One Birmingham resident filmed the bikers on Hurst Street at about 18:00 BST on Sunday, with the bikes said to return to the road about three hours later.

He described the situation as a “regular occurrence, a noise nuisance and dangerous” as the culprits operated “without fear of what’s ahead”.

West Midlands Police said it was aware of the footage showing “members of the public at risk of harm”.

Facebook users have posted similar videos of quad bikers zooming through the city centre and racing along tramlines while wearing masks and balaclavas.

“Brum seems to be totally out of control at the moment,” one user said.

Drivers have reported that such riding is happening “more and more” in Birmingham, with one witnessing an occasion when there were about 12 bikers behind them.

The West Midlands force said: “If a rider is caught using any type of off-road motorbike or quad bike and causing a nuisance to others they are liable to prosecution and the vehicle will be seized.”

It asked for anyone with information that could help identify the group in the footage to get in touch.
