A man has been arrested after a video threatening pupils and staff at a college circulated online, police have said.

South Wales Police said that on Sunday evening they were made aware of a video in which threats were made towards people attending and working at Merthyr Tydfil College.

A 21-year-old man from Gwent was arrested in connection with the incident later that evening and is in police custody.

In a statement issued by Merthyr Tydfil College, they confirmed they were liaising with police and had opened for the first day of term “following a thorough review and assessment of the safety of staff, learners and building users”.

The video was posted on YouTube, with the force saying an investigation was underway to establish the full circumstances.

The college has around 2800 students aged sixteen and over and more than 300 members of staff, according to its website.

A statement issued by the college executive team said that at 21:45 BST on Sunday they were advised of “a video appearing on YouTube, which posed a threat to college staff and learners”.

They “immediately” alerted police, who confirmed they had received multiple calls about this, and were continuing to liaise with the police as their investigations and enquiries continued.

“We would like to take the opportunity to thank South Wales Police for their support in what has been a challenging few hours,” they added.

In a Facebook post, Merthyr Tydfil Council thanked police for “acting quickly to make an arrest”.
