Antrim Coast Half Marathon wins for Geoffrey Kamworor and Mizan Alem

Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor and Ethiopia’s Mizan Alem claimed comfortable wins in the Antrim Coast Half Marathon men’s and women’s events on Sunday.

With Uganda’s Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei having withdrawn from the men’s race because of illness earlier this week, Kamworor crossed the line in 59 minutes 51 seconds.

Three-time World Half Marathon champion Kamworor, 32, was 90 seconds ahead of Israel’s Tadesse Getahon in second (61:21) with Great Britain’s Phil Sesemann in third (61:22).

Cork’s Ryan Creech was the top Irish athlete in the men’s race, finishing eighth in 64:48.

In the women’s event, Alem – the 2021 Under-20 world 5,000m champion – was a class apart as she finished in 65:38.

The 23-year-old was well clear of Kenya’s Loice Chemnung (66:06), who finished runner-up for the second year in a row. Alem’s fellow Ethiopian Senayet Getachew was third in 66:33.

Great Britain’s Calli Hauger-Thackery finished seventh after crossing in 65:43.
