Police said the death was “unexplained” but there were no suspicious circumstances

Police sealed off a property in a Scottish Borders village at the weekend following the discovery of an 81-year-old man’s body.

The front of the large detached house in Ancrum, was cordoned off after a “possible harmful substance” was found inside on Saturday evening.

Officers in a patrol car remained at the scene on Sunday while the full circumstances of the death were being investigated.

However, Police Scotland said that while the death remained “unexplained” it was believed there were no suspicious circumstances.

A statement said: “Police received a report of the death of an 81-year-old man within a property on West Myrescroft in Ancrum around 18:05 on Saturday, 1 March.

“Emergency services attended and a possible harmful substance was found within, however there was no risk to the wider public.

“The death is being treated as unexplained but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

“Emergency services will remain in attendance while inquiries to establish the full circumstances continue.”
