Informal caregivers of individuals living with dementia experience notable reductions in stress and improvements in mindfulness within just three to four weeks of using a tailored mobile application, according to a secondary analysis published in JMIR Aging.

The research was conducted by Michael P. Williams, Ph.D., Darby M. Simon, Ph.D., Morgan Seward, BA, Raquel G. Tatar, MA, MSPH, Ph.D., Jennifer Huberty, Ph.D., Ana-Maria Vranceanu, Ph.D., and Evan Plys, Ph.D., representing the Center for Health Outcomes and Interdisciplinary Research at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Healthy Minds Innovation, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Caring for a family member or loved one with dementia often carries immense emotional and physical strain. While traditional, in-person mindfulness programs effectively reduce stress, caregiving demands—such as limited free time, lack of respite care and rigid schedules—frequently prevent caregivers from attending structured sessions. Digital interventions like the Healthy Minds Program for Caregivers (HMP-C) offer an accessible alternative, allowing users to practice micro-lessons and guided meditations on their mobile devices whenever time permits.

In this secondary analysis of a 12-week randomized controlled trial involving 42 active app users, researchers tracked weekly self-reported ratings of stress and mindfulness alongside objective app usage metrics. Participants were encouraged to use the app for at least 70 minutes per week.

Results revealed that the most dramatic health gains occurred early in the intervention: Perceived stress dropped by an average of two points on a 10-point scale within the first three weeks, while mindfulness ratings rose by 2.5 points within the first four weeks before plateauing into a steady skill-maintenance phase.

The trial demonstrated that caregivers who began the study with the highest baseline stress levels experienced the greatest immediate relief from building mindfulness skills. Furthermore, every additional 10 minutes of weekly app usage between baseline and week 1 was consistently associated with a 0.14-point increase in mindfulness and a 0.14-point decrease in perceived stress, demonstrating a stable benefit throughout the full 12-week study period.

The study authors concluded that mindfulness skills are acquired rapidly during the initial weeks of app use and that sustained engagement with the mobile program serves as an effective mechanism for preserving mental health improvements over time. The findings provide insight for clinicians and digital health developers seeking to optimize app dosing guidelines and retention strategies for overburdened family caregivers.
