Ian Currie was last seen leaving Glenfinnan on Tuesday

Police are appealing to trace a walker who went missing on a long-distance hiking route in the Highlands.

Ian Currie, from Edinburgh, was last seen on Tuesday when he left the Glenfinnan area to walk the Cape Wrath Trail.

Mr Currie, 76, was due to arrive at the Inverie Bunkhouse on Thursday evening but failed to arrive and officers are concerned he may have strayed from his planned path.

They have asked for anyone who saw him to come forward and share the information with police.

Mr Currie, who is an experienced walker, is described as being about 6ft tall, of medium build, with white hair and wearing glasses.

He was thought to be wearing a black waterproof jacket and carrying a rucksack and a green tent.

Officers are concerned he may have travelled east from Glenfinnan instead of north as initially intended.

Inverie Bunkhouse is about 33 miles (53km) from Glenfinnan.

Specialist officers including mountain rescue, search and rescue dogs and Lochaber and Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue teams have participated in the search alongside HM Coastguard.

Insp Katy Macrae said the terrain Mr Currie was covering was “extremely challenging, especially in difficult weather”.
