Zak Chappell onslaught gives Derbyshire control over Glamorgan

Zak Chappell’s best Derbyshire bowling figures saw them dominate day one against Glamorgan as the visitors were shot out for 168.

Harry Came (58 not out) and Wayne Madsen (41 not out) steered Derbyshire to 119-2 in the evening session.

Glamorgan crashed to 32-6 in the first hour as Chappell took advantage of bowler-friendly conditions.

Timm van der Gugten’s unbeaten 46 was their top score.

It was a useful toss to win in grey and overcast conditions as ex-Glamorgan skipper David Lloyd inserted his old club and saw Derbyshire’s opening bowlers cash in, giving them hope of a first Championship win at their headquarters since September 2019.

All-rounder Ben Kellaway was the latest player promoted to open but was the first of a procession to fall as the top order recorded three ducks, with Chappell and Luis Reece (2-30) causing havoc.

The ball was swinging in the air and moving off the pitch, with the occasional inconsistent bounce to trouble the batters and every edge gratefully snapped up, keeper Brooke Guest taking four of the six wickets to fall in the first hour.

Chappell’s heroics were interrupted by a heavy shower and Glamorgan found life easier in the afternoon, as Dan Douthwaite (36) and Van der Gugten started a painstaking recovery with a stand of 55.

Debutants Fraser Sheat, from Canterbury in New Zealand, and Ned Leonard, on loan from Somerset, chipped in 18 and 15, but Chappell claimed his sixth wicket and loan spinner Jack Morley wrapped it up with his third ball.

Reece fell cheaply to an accurate opening spell from Van der Gugten, while Brooke Guest, caught at mid-wicket, was Leonard’s first Glamorgan wicket.

Leonard, a relative rookie in first-class cricket, had Came dropped and nearly bowled Madsen, but could not match Van der Gugten’s control as Came’s half-century strengthened Derbyshire’s grip on their best day of the season.

Madsen was starting to accelerate when bad light curtailed play 12 overs early.
