Salford City’s pre-season friendly at York City was abandoned after Ammies players were allegedly subjected to racist abuse from home fans.

Both teams were taken off after 84 minutes and the game was called off a short time later.

The matter is now being investigated by National League club York City and North Yorkshire Police.

“Salford City condemns racism in all forms, will always protect and defend its players and staff from any form of behaviour of this kind, and condemns this evening’s behaviour in the strongest possible terms,” said a statement from League Two side Salford.

“We would like to thank York City for its swift response to this incident.”

A York statement described it as an “extremely distressing evening”.

“Any spectators who may have witnessed tonight’s events should contact North Yorkshire Police or York City Football Club as soon as possible,” the statement added.

“Any supporter found guilty of racial abuse will face the strongest possible sanctions from the club.”
