Firefighters rescued workers trapped on a window ledge of a Rio de Janeiro clothing factory after the building caught fire on Wednesday.

The factory was being used to make costumes for Brazil’s carnival celebrations, which kick off later this month.

At least 20 people are reported to have been injured in the blaze, with some in a critical condition in hospital.

According to news agency AFP, the head of the local fire department, Col Luciano Pacheco Sarmento, said those affected were working in a “precarious manner”, without “safety conditions.”
