Women’s World Cup qualifier: Scotland beaten by Bangladesh despite record eighth-wicket stand

Scotland’s hopes of progressing at the Women’s World Cup qualifier suffered a blow following a 34-run defeat by Bangladesh in Lahore.

Bangladesh and hosts Pakistan each have 100% records after three matches and are well placed to claim the two available spots at the autumn World Cup in India.

Scotland face Ireland in their final game on Friday, and after wins over West Indies and Thailand but a defeat by Pakistan, need victory and other results to go their way.

Bangladesh chose to bat first and reached 108-1 after 25 overs.

Tournament top-scorer Nigar Sultana hit 83 not out from 59 balls as Bangladesh posted 276-6.

In reply, Scotland lost Abbi Aitken-Drummond in the second over and skipper Kathryn Bryce, who had averaged 52.33 across her three previous innings at the tournament, for five.

Sarah Bryce made 42 but the Scots were reduced to 110-7 at the start of the 28th over before a stirring stand from Priyanaz Chatterji and Rachel Slater.

The duo put on 115 together, a new eighth-wicket partnership record in women’s one-day international cricket.

Both made maiden international half-centuries before Chatterji was eventually stumped on 61 in the 48th over, while Slater finished not out on the same score as the Scots reached 242-9.
