Women’s Super League: Wigan Warriors on track for treble

Unbeaten Wigan Warriors moved ominously towards back-to-back trebles by thrashing closest rivals Leeds Rhinos 50-12 on their own AMT Headingley pitch.

Denis Betts’ side, who already have the League Leaders’ Shield and Challenge Cup in the bag, ran in nine tries against the team who are favourites to provide their opposition in the Grand Final at the end of the month.

Leeds had hoped that last week’s comeback against the Warriors, when they closed a 20-point deficit to eventually lose 26-20, was a good sign.

That notion was mercilessly crushed as Megan Williams, Ruby Hunter and Mary Coleman all scored tries inside the first 11 minutes, with the excellent Isobel Rowe converting all three.

Williams powered over for her second try, winger Anna Davies ran almost the length of the field for another and added her 17th of the season from close range before Ruby Bruce forced her way over for Leeds’ sole try late in the first half.

Ellise Derbyshire made it six tries in six games with a pacy effort, Super League’s top scorer Eva Hunter bagged her 19th of the season, and Rowe capped a fine display with another before Connie Boyd notched a late consolation try.

Tilly Churm returned to the Featherstone Rovers side with a hat-trick which helped them to a 34-6 win over bottom club Barrow Raiders.

Her early score was cancelled out by Nicole Stewart’s try and conversion, but Churm added two more and Ash Prescott, Aaliyah Brewster and Emillie Holmes all crossed the line.

Defeat leaves Barrow hoping Leigh Leopards lose to Huddersfield on Sunday, which would give them the chance to beat Leigh next week and avoid the relegation play-off.
