Will Evans: Newport County ‘knock back’ bids for striker

Newport County have rejected bids for striker Will Evans, club chairman Huw Jenkins says.

Wales C international Evans, 27, netted 24 goals for Newport last season.

His haul of 21 League Two goals placed him sixth in the fourth tier’s top scorers list.

Jenkins confirmed Newport have already rejected approaches for farmer’s son Evans this summer.

Jenkins, who watched Newport’s 2-0 friendly win over Pontypridd United on Tuesday, said: “There has been interest and I will say now we have had a couple of offers, tentative offers, from League One clubs. We have knocked both of them back.

“There have been other conversations but nothing else really to report. That is just expected for a guy who scored over 20 goals last year.

”That’s where it’s at. We hope things stay as they are.”

It is not the first time clubs have shown interest in Evans, who Newport recruited from Cymru Premier League outfit Bala Town in May 2022.

Last January, then Newport boss Graham Coughlan confirmed there had been interest in the former Cardiff Met player, who enhanced his reputation with a goal in the Exiles’ 4-2 FA Cup home defeat to eventual winners Manchester United in January.

Since then, Newport have triggered a year extension on Evans’ contract which now runs to the summer of 2025.

But it will be no surprise if their resolve is tested again before the summer transfer window closes on 30 August.

Evans has yet to feature in a pre-season friendly because of a what Newport say is a slight strain.

Newport’s next pre-season game is away to Cymru Premier League side Barry Town United on Saturday.
