Why don’t Indian men’s cricketers play in The Hundred?

Indian men’s players are not allowed to participate in foreign T20 leagues, including The Hundred, according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s rules.

If a cricketer wants to play in an international T20 league, they would have to retire from Indian cricket at all levels.

However, there is an exception for India’s women who are allowed to join foreign T20 leagues.

This is because the Women’s Premier League – India’s franchise league – only started in 2023, and Indian players had played in overseas competitions before then.

However, no Indian women will participate in The Hundred this year after Deepti Sharma pulled out to manage her workload.

Several IPL owners have acquired stakes in Hundred teams, which could suggest Indian men featuring in the competition in the future.

“I think it is only a matter of time before the Indian players will play in The Hundred,” said ECB chairman Richard Thompson.

“[The new owners have] enabled us to hopefully create a competition that becomes the IPL of the northern hemisphere.”
