More than 12 illegal e-bikes have been seized by police in Birmingham city centre.

West Midlands Police said that riders were issued with fines after bikes were sold or modified so they could reach speeds of up to 40mph.

The speed limit for e-bikes is 15.5mph without pedalling, according to the government, with one seized bike reaching more than 70mph when checked by police.

“Generally, the people that ride the bikes know that what they are doing is incorrect, so that is why they try and make off from us,” PC Paige Gartlan said.
