West Ham 0-0 Brighton: Scrappy Women’s Super League match ends goalless

Kirsty Smith of West Ham battles with Vicky Losada and Elisabeth Terland
Both West Ham and Brighton have failed to score in eight of their 18 WSL games this season

West Ham and Brighton both claimed rare clean sheets as they played out an uneventful goalless draw in the Women’s Super League.

In a scrappy meeting between two sides with little still to play for, neither team could break the deadlock.

The Seagulls avoided conceding for the first time since January, while this was West Ham’s first clean sheet in 16 games.

The draw moves West Ham one point closer to safety.

Rehanne Skinner’s side are seven points clear of Bristol City who occupy the relegation spot, while Brighton moved above Leicester into eighth.

The Seagulls missed the opportunity to score an early opener when Elisabeth Terland’s lacklustre strike was easily snuffed out by the West Ham defence.

The next clear-cut chance fell to West Ham’s Riko Ueki nearly 40 minutes later, but the Japan international failed to nod a close-range header past Brighton keeper Sophie Baggaley.

Emma Snerle and Honoka Hayashi forced Baggaley into fine saves either side of the break, while the English keeper also denied Anouk Denton late on.

It was a quiet afternoon, however, for Mackenzie Arnold at the other end with Brighton registering just two shots on target.

Mikey Harris may feel aggrieved the Seagulls were not awarded a spot-kick when Jorelyn Carabali brought down Madison Haley, but the referee was quick to wave away the penalty appeal.
