Watch: What we know about newly discovered monkey species

A monkey with pinkish-orange lips and a black face that lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been confirmed as a new species to science.

The primate was spotted hidden away in the high tree canopy of dense tropical forests in Lomami National Park, in the central east of the country.

Conservationists reported seeing the animal back in 2008. But it was not until another sighting 10 years later, that an international team set out to find and study the monkey.

Dr Karen Laurenson, Africa director at the Frankfurt Zoological Society, said the discovery was “amazing” and showed there was still “a lot out there in the natural world that needs to be explored”.
