Want to be a commentator? Here’s your chance…

Have a passion for sport and love talking about it? Then you should enter the BBC’s New Voices 2024, which aims to find the next generation of commentators.

Schemes like this have a proven track record of identifying some of the most talented commentators in the industry.

Among them is Flo Pollock, who went on to cover Women’s Super League football for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and work on ITV’s EFL highlights.

Flo said: “I had no background in commentary or radio before as it had never even crossed my mind that this could be a career for me.

“The New Voices scheme changed the direction of my working life completely – I’m now a full-time football commentator.

“I couldn’t have done that without the BBC.”

Claire Thomas – a winner of New Voices 2021 – now regularly commentates on women’s rugby.

She said: “As someone with a background in production, but fairly new to broadcasting, the New Voices scheme was the perfect catalyst – and something for which I’m hugely grateful.

“Just being selected gave my confidence a tangible boost, but it was in the training that I benefited the most.

“One-on-one sessions with a master of their craft, out and about at top-flight fixtures, is an extraordinary resource – thinking about it now, I can’t believe how lucky I was – and I’ve never had such detailed or constructive feedback.”

Flo and Claire also shared their top tips for commentating.

Flo said: “If you are enjoying the game your voice will convey that to the listener, so enjoy it. When doing prep: what is different about today and how can I prepare for that?”

Claire added: “Be authentic, stay on top of the action and prep is queen.”
