Wales’ top doctor during Covid pandemic to step down

Wales’ top doctor, who oversaw the nation’s response to the Covid pandemic, has announced he will stand down after eight-and-a-half years.

As chief medical officer Sir Frank Atherton provided independent advice to the Welsh government during the pandemic.

Announcing his decision to stand down at the end of the month, he described his position as a privilege and a highlight of his career, having served Wales during an “incredibly challenging time”.

Health Secretary Jeremy Miles said Sir Frank played a leading role in the response to the pandemic and was extremely grateful for his “invaluable advice and guidance”.
