Volunteers to restore overgrown graveyard

Volunteers have pledged to restore an abandoned graveyard that apparently became lost in time.

It can be found among the overgrowth between Llandaff Cathedral and Llandaff Cemetery, but many graves have become inaccessible since nature took over.

“It would be lovely if we could restore it,” said volunteer Judith Thompson whose family members are buried at the site.

On 2 January 1941, the German Luftwaffe dropped 100 bombs on Cardiff, killing 153 people and partially-destroying the cathedral.

This is one explanation why work stopped on maintaining what was the cathedral’s main graveyard between 1860 and 1922.

Cathedral volunteers plan to start a community group to maintain and care for the site.
