A viable device was discovered after a security alert which has now ended, police have said.

Homes were evacuated in Linden Place in Newtownards at about 17:30 BST on Wednesday.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes shortly after midnight on Thursday.

Police had received a report of a suspicious object located inside a house.

Officers and ammunition technical officers attended, and examined the device, which was discovered to be viable.

“A number of neighbouring properties were evacuated, as enquiries were conducted, and the device was secured and taken away for further examination,” said Sgt Fenton from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

PSNI enquiries are ongoing and they are appealing for information.
