Veteran sees Spitfire plane for the first time in decades

Since childhood, Ron Ogden has been fascinated with planes, so when National Service came round just after the war it was an easy choice for the 18-year-old.

Arriving 78 years ago at a remote Navy base on the Solway in Carlisle, his love affair with Cumbria and the Spitfire began.

Ron has been recounting his experience of National Service in Cumbria for the BBC project “We Were There”, which tells the stories of people who lived through the Second World War.

Video produced by Ed Hanson.
