Uefa launches carbon footprint calculator to help lower emissions across the game

European football’s governing body Uefa has launched a carbon footprint calculator to help clubs lower their emissions.

The launch comes after the organisation was criticised for the level of emissions as a result of an expanding fixture calendar.

“[It is an] important day,” said Uefa sustainability director Michele Uva.

“Not only Uefa but the clubs, the leagues and all in football.

“We have built the car, now we need to enter the race and it’s one we want to win. Football needs to be the microphone, the voice of best practice, but we are just part of a solution.”

The calculator, which has been verified by a third party, has been in the works for two years.

As well as flights, it also incorporates emissions from purchased goods, services and facilities.

Uefa have signed the UN’s Race to Zero which calls for a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and net zero by 2040.

German Bundesliga club Wolfsburg said: “The calculator is well designed and goes into depths of data collection.

“This paves the way for long-term change.”

English club Arsenal said: “Giving all the clubs the same calculator tool will enable us to work closer together and drive efficiency and emission reductions across the whole game.”
