Two men charged over attempted murder of police detective

Two men, aged 45 and 25, have been charged in relation to the attempted murder of Det Ch Insp John Caldwell in February 2023.

The senior detective was off duty when he was shot several times at a sports complex after coaching a youth football team in Omagh, County Tyrone.

The two men were arrested and detained under the Terrorism Act on Monday.

The 45-year-old man, who was arrested in the Stewartstown area of County Tyrone, and the 25-year-old, who was arrested in west Belfast, have both been charged with the preparation of terrorist acts and perverting the course of justice.

They are due to appear at Dungannon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
