The inquest heard Lewis-Ranwell was released from Barnstaple Police Station on bail shortly before 03:00 on 9 February and taken to the Freedom Centre, which can provide accommodation for people being released from custody.
Less than seven hours later, he was arrested for the second time at about 09:40 after attacking elderly farmer John Ellis with a 4ft (1.2m) saw and a “large stick”, Sutcliffe said.
“He was looking to attack Mr Ellis with these items,” Sutcliffe added.
Lewis-Ranwell was released for the second time due to custody time limits 24 hours later on 10 February, Sutcliffe told jurors.
He then travelled from Barnstaple to Exeter via an aborted taxi ride and a rail replacement bus. Once there, he killed Payne first and then the Carter brothers a few hours later.
Jurors were shown CCTV footage of Lewis-Ranwell entering Payne’s home and leaving the property about six minutes later.
Sutcliffe said Payne had been found dead in an upstairs bedroom with head injuries believed to have been caused by a rusty hammer found in the room.
The Carter brothers also had head injuries which police believed had been caused by a spade found in their house, he added.
The next morning, Lewis-Ranwell was arrested for the third time – for affray and possessing an offensive weapon – following an incident at a hotel in Exeter.
