Tributes paid to man who died during Storm Goretti in Cornwall

The sister of a man who died during Storm Goretti has paid tribute to him.

James Southey has been described by his sister, Sam Southey, as a “gentle giant who would do anything for anyone”.

Emergency services were called to the Mawgan area of Helston in Cornwall at about 19:35 GMT on Thursday after a tree fell on to a caravan.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed a man in his 50s was found dead inside the caravan after the tree was removed on Friday.

Southey said her family were “all in shock and struggling to come to terms with this very sad news”.

“Never in a million years do you expect that knock on the door to be for you”, she wrote on Facebook.

Adding to her tribute, one person wrote: “I am really sorry to hear this news, James was a lovely, kind man and I remember him as a neighbour who would always help when he could.”

Another person wrote: “James was a lovely person with a kind heart.”

Police confirmed the death was not being treated as suspicious, and a file would be prepared for the coroner.
