Long-serving Somerset all-rounder Tom Abell has signed a new contract to keep him at Taunton until the end of the 2028 season.

The 32-year-old has spent his entire career at the club, having come up through the club’s academy.

Abell, who helped Somerset win the T20 Blast in 2023 and 2025, has played 278 matches for the club across all formats.

He has scored more than 11,700 runs with 24 centuries, as well as taking 62 wickets.

“The club is a huge part of me and my family’s lives,” Abell told the club website., external

“Getting to represent Somerset is something I’m very proud of. It’s been great to be a Somerset player over the last few years, and I want to take that on and continue to bring success to the club.

“I’m a Somerset boy and a Taunton boy through and through and I’ve only ever wanted to play for Somerset.

“I want to be a one-club man so it’s obviously a great feeling to sign this extension.”

Abell was the first Somerset academy player to be appointed captain in 2017 and led the club to a One-Day Cup victory two years later at Lord’s.

He has also played for England Lions and played franchise cricket across the world.

“Tom is a player who epitomises everything that it means to play for Somerset County Cricket Club,” director of cricket Andy Hurry said.

“He has a genuine passion for this club and everything that it represents.

“His work ethic is second to none and his dedication to improving every day is something to be admired.

“Over the years Tom has developed into an outstanding multi-format cricketer, arguably one of the best in the country, and he has been integral to our success over the last few years.”
