Super Bowl 60: Green Day to headline opening ceremony

Green Day, who are vocal critics of United States President Donald Trump, will perform at the Super Bowl opening ceremony next month.

Members of the American band have criticised Trump on several occasions in recent years.

Last summer, lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong spoke out against Trump’s administration at Download Festival in the UK, and said: “It’s up to us to fight back.”

Referencing Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan, he also altered the words to their song American Idiot to say: “I’m not part of the Maga agenda.”

Speaking as their appearance at Super Bowl was announced, Armstrong said the band were “super hyped”, adding: “Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”

Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny has already been announced as the headline act for the Super Bowl half-time show.

His appearance polarised opinion as he had said in an interview with i-D magazine he was avoiding the US on his world tour out of concerns that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents might conduct raids on fans at his concerts.

Responding to Bad Bunny’s booking for Super Bowl, Trump said on NewsMax’s Greg Kelly Reports: “I’ve never heard of him. I don’t know who he is.”

Super Bowl 60 takes place in Santa Clara, California on February 8.

Trump attended last year’s Super Bowl, where he saw the Kansas City Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles, but it is not yet known if he will be present this year.

Notable half-time performances in recent years have included Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna.
