Storm Bram has left flooding and travel disruption across Wales after a night of heavy rain and strong winds.

Lamp-posts on the Prince of Wales Bridge on the M4 at risk of falling in the high winds had to be removed, causing the bridge to be closed until 6:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Roads were closed due to flooding in Gwynedd, Powys, Pembrokeshire and Monmouthshire.

On Wednesday morning, Natural Resources Wales had 11 flood warnings remaining in force across, mostly south and west Wales, along with 29 flood alerts.

Disruption from flooding and blocked rail lines was reported in various parts of Wales, causing delays and line closures on Wednesday.

In Gwynedd, the A499 is shut from the Pwllheli to the A497 at Penrhos.

The A483 in Powys – from Beulah to Builth Wells – is also shut, as is the A487 in Pembrokeshire near the Brawdy business park.

In Monouthshire, flooding caused the closure of the A4042 near Llanellen.

Floodwater covers a riverside area on a grey, overcast day. Muddy water has risen over pathways and grassland, submerging posts and surrounding a large tree in the center of the scene. Buildings and railings line the left side, while a planter with small flowers is visible in the foreground.

A Met Office yellow warning was in place for wind and rain across Wales on Tuesday – though this has now ended.

National Grid reported more than 1,600 properties being without power in south and west Wales as of 17:30 GMT on Tuesday.

The Met Office warned of gusts up 60-70 mph (96.5-112.6 km/h), with wind gusts of 85mph (133.5 km/h) recorded in Capel Curig in Conwy county.

Storm Bram has been named by Met Eireann, which is Ireland’s equivalent of the Met Office.

Flood warnings

Flood warnings were in place in the following locations on Wednesday morning:

  • River Usk from Glangrwyne to Newbridge on Usk
  • River Rhyd Hir at Riverside Terrace, Pwllheli
  • River Ritec at Tenby
  • River Towy at Carmarthen Quay, Carmarthen
  • River Tyweli at Station Road, Llandysul
  • River Teifi at Llandysul Bridge, Llandysul
  • River Teifi at Llechryd
  • River Teifi at Cenarth
  • River Teifi at Newcastle Emlyn
  • River Vyrnwy at Llanymynech

According to Natural Resources Wales, a flood warning signifies that “flooding is expected” with immediate action required.
