Spade-wielding man in Derby tackled by member of public

Footage showing the moment a member of the public tackled a man wielding a spade in Derby city centre has been released by police.

Derbyshire Police said it was called to St Peter’s Street on 26 September to reports of a 38-year-old man carrying a spade.

Jamie Birks, of Beaufort Street, in Derby, was charged with five counts of assaulting emergency workers after he used violence towards officers at the scene and in custody.

Birks pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to 27 weeks in prison during an appearance at North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 21 October.
