South Shields sinkhole forces people to leave their homes

A sinkhole has appeared on a street in the early hours, forcing people to be evacuated from their homes.

A portion of Broughton Road in South Shields, South Tyneside, collapsed before 05:30 GMT, Northumbria Police said.

Emergency services are in attendance but no-one is reported to have been injured.

A number of properties have been evacuated as a precautionary measure and the street is currently closed to vehicles and pedestrians.
