South Belfast: Man shouted racial abuse and sprayed fire extinguisher

Police are investigating a racially motivated crime in which a man entered a restaurant and shouted abuse before spraying a fire extinguisher at customers.

At around 21.00 BST on Friday, police said an “aggressive” man entered the restaurant in the University Street area of Belfast and began banging doors and shouting racial abuse.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Belfast City Chief Inspector Kelly Gibson said the man then grabbed a fire extinguisher.

He “took it outside the restaurant where he discharged it in the direction of outside diners, before leaving in the direction of Dudley Street while shouting further racial slurs”, she said.

Enquiries to identify the man are ongoing and police have asked anyone with further information to contact them.
