An 88-year-old woman who strapped herself to a plane while it performed loop-the-loops said she wants to inspire young people to take part in adventures.

Gill Clay was attached to a biplane – which has two pairs of wings stacked one above the other – as it flew at 150mph (240km/h) as part of efforts to raise money for scouting in Wales.

Ms Clay, from Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, has been involved in the Scout movement for 40 years, and is the granddaughter of its founder Robert Baden-Powell, who she described as one of her heroes.

“Giving adventure and life skills to young people is so important,” she said, adding that he would be “thrilled” by how popular the scout movement is today.

She also said you should “ignore your age” and do what you feel like, adding that “most of the important things” she has learned in life have been through scouting.

Rhian Moore, chief volunteer Wales, described Ms Clay as “a true force of nature and a shining example of what scouting stands for”.
