Scotland: Jack Dempsey returns to squad for France game

Scotland have been boosted by the unexpected return of number eight Jack Dempsey to their squad before Saturday’s showdown with Grand-Slam chasing France.

The 31-year-old injured his bicep in the Calcutta Cup win over England and was expected to miss the rest of the Six Nations.

But Scotland announced he has returned to the set-up before the visit of undefeated France to Murrayfield.

It is good news for Gregor Townsend’s side, who sit second in the table, because Dempsey’s ball carrying and dynamism was missed in the win over Wales.

The Glasgow Warriors back row scored in the defeat by Italy, has been in fine form for his club this season and, if he is fit to play a part at Murrayfield, would add more grunt as Scotland go up a formidable pack of French forwards.

France will arrive in Edinburgh as favourites to win the match and set up a tilt for the Grand Slam against England in Paris.

However, a Scotland victory would keep their title hopes alive before visiting Ireland on the final weekend.

Glasgow front-row pair Seb Stephen and Murphy Walker have also joined up with the Scotland squad after playing in Warriors’ defeat by Connacht on Saturday.

Walker, 26, has five caps so far, but 20-year-old Stephen has yet to make his debut.
