Ryder Cup: What is the biggest ever victory?

The biggest margin of victory since the competition was expanded in 1979 was 10 points in 2021, when the United States won 19-9 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

The record win before expansion was a huge 15 points in 1967, when the United States beat Great Britain 23½-8½ at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas.

However, there were 32 points on offer across the three days as 16 singles matches were played across two sessions on Sunday, with players able to play twice.

That was reduced to 12 singles matches, with players only able to play once, when continental Europe joined in 1979, leaving 28 points to play for.

But, even with the fewer points available these days, Europe could break the all-time record margin – but they would need to win 11 of the singles matches to do so.

Europe’s biggest margin of victory is nine points, when they won 18½-9½ in successive Ryder Cups at Oakland Hills in 2004 and The K Club in 2006.

They will break that record if they win eight of their 12 singles matches on Sunday. They could win fewer and still break the record if some matches are halved.

The biggest away win is 18½-9½ – achieved by the US at Walton Heath in 1981 and Europe at Oakland Hills in 2004.

The most points won by a team was 23½ by United States in 1967, with their 19 in 2021 the most post-1979.
