A Romanian man has been arrested by counter-terrorism officers in connection with a fire at a DHL depot.

The fire broke out a warehouse in Minworth, in the West Midlands, on 22 July and was believed to have been started in a parcel, although no-one was injured.

Speaking in November, security officials told US media they believed a series of fires targeting courier firms across Europe were part of an orchestrated campaign by Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, although the country denied involvement.

On Wednesday, the Met Police said its teams had arrested a 38-year-old man on 19 March after he flew in to Stansted Airport.

He was held on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service, before being released on bail until a date in July.

The Met said it was asked to lead the investigation because of its “specialist capability and expertise in investigating such matters”.

It said after the arrest, searches were carried out at two addresses in Essex.

No-one was injured in the fire in Minworth, but the Met said it was speaking to European police forces, to determine if the fire in the West Midlands was linked with similar ones across Europe.
