Rob Elliot: Gateshead boss set to be named Crawley Town manager

Simon Pryde – Total Sport host, BBC Radio Newcastle:

Rob Elliot’s departure will be an enormous blow to Gateshead fans.

The former Newcastle goalkeeper, having been part of Mike Williamson’s coaching staff, impressed when he took over after Williamson left for MK Dons in October 2023.

That disappointment of not being able to compete in the National League play-offs was soon forgotten when they won the FA Trophy at Wembley in May.

Elliot was given the job permanently, and fans looked forward with optimism to the new season.

They were right to do so. The free-flowing, attacking football continued, and Gateshead are again firmly established among the division’s front-runners.

Fans will understand Elliot’s reasons for leaving, but are well aware he and his coaching staff leave a huge void to fill.
