Roads flooded in Urmston after water main bursts

Roads and shops have been closed after a burst water main caused significant flooding and disruption in part of Greater Manchester.

Engineers from United Utilities were sent to Flixton Road and Irlam Road in the Urmston area of Trafford. Both were subsequently closed by police due to rising water levels.

United Utilities said it had also deployed tankers to Moorside Road, Woodsend Road, and Bowers Avenue in Davyhulme to “keep customers on supply”.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and thank our customers for their patience while we work quickly to fix the burst,” said a company spokesperson.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “We have one fire engine there to support United Utilities.”

“It is a bit scary,” said local resident Emily Yarwood.

The 27-year-old described her day as “wild and hectic” since water levels began to rise on Monday morning.

“At one point I did have to start thinking whether we needed sandbags because we didn’t know which direction [the flood water] was going in and it didn’t seem to be stopping.

“I thought we might have to barricade the house and move things upstairs.”

Daniel Aitken, who runs Pauls Floors on Flixton Road, said the flooding forced him to close the shop.

“We’ve had to leave because I had to move my vehicle twice, and the water just kept getting deeper.

“We took the decision to close because there’s no way anyone’s getting here by foot.

“The water was actually getting up to the front doors of a few properties nearby.”
