Roads closed as snow and winds grip the North in Storm Chandra

Snowy conditions have shut roads as Storm Chandra grips the country.

Heavy snowfall has blocked the B6276 road from Brough, Cumbria, to Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, making it being impassable for vehicles, Westmorland and Furness Council says.

National Highways said the A66 was also closed in both directions between the A67, near Bowes in County Durham, and the A685, near Brough, due to the snow.

Drivers travelling across the Pennines have been advised to “plan ahead and consider alternate routes”, with council crews working to clear snow on roads around Alston.

Parts of Cumbria and the North East of England are under a yellow warning of rain and snow until 17:00 GMT.

Another yellow warning for ice for the whole of Cumbria and the North East of England starts at 00:00 on Wednesday until 10:00.

Westmorland and Furness Council added it had received reports of fallen trees as strong winds hit Cumbria.
