A city’s famous row of red phone boxes have been taken away as the first part of a restoration programme.
The nine Grade II listed landmarks in Preston were lifted on to a lorry before being taken to Yorkshire for sandblasting, repair and repainting.
Once the historical phone boxes are restored – which is expected to be by spring next year – they will be put back outside the former post office on Market Street in the town centre.
The city council said it hoped they would be used for creative art installations as part of a wider £20m investment in what it was calling the Harris Quarter.
Councillor Valerie Wise said the phone boxes were an “iconic landmark”.
