Remembrance poppies ‘ripped down’ from lampposts in Borras

A councillor said she was “disappointed and hurt” after large Remembrance poppies she put up on lampposts were “ripped down”.

Debbie Wallice, of Wrexham Council, said she put up 20 poppies in Borras, near Wrexham, but 13 were removed within a few days.

“I just feel so disappointed and hurt this has happened – it’s so disrespectful,” she said.

She added the local council had agreed to buy additional poppies to replace those removed in time for Remembrance Sunday.

Wallice said she put up the poppies last week ahead of the annual events and services.

“A lot people in Borras served or had family who served in the Second World War, so it’s important to remember those who lost their lives fighting for us,” she said.

She added that Remembrance events were important for many local residents.

“I won’t let a minority disregard the service of so many,” she said, adding that the new poppies would be installed on Thursday.

Remembrance Day marks the day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918.

Remembrance Sunday is also marked each year, this year falling on 9 November.

A period of silence takes place at 11:00 GMT to remember those who have died in wars around the world, with events held around the United Kingdom.
